Why Yoga?

Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years across hundreds of countries by millions of people. Why has this traditional practice stood the test of time and is today perhaps more popular than ever before…



Those that do yoga claim they have more energy, sleep better, and are more inclined to nourish their bodies with healthy food and healthy thoughts. They say they are in general happier and feel like they are achieving their goals, both mentally and physically.



What is yoga?


When we search the hashtag #yoga on Instagram, the majority of pictures we see are of beautiful women in mind boggling positions in front of beautiful backdrops, however the reality of what yoga is, in its purest form, could not be further from the truth.


Yoga is the study of balance; it aids in bringing balance to all areas of your life. It is a system, not of beliefs, but of techniques and guidance for enriched living.


In sanskrit the word yoga is derived from yuj, meaning union. Unifying the mind, body and sprit.


Today millions of people use various aspects of yoga to help raise their quality of life in areas such as fitness, stress relief, wellness, vitality, mental clarity, healing, peace of mind and spiritual growth.



The Eight Limbs of Yoga:


To get the full benefits of yoga, it is important to know that there are actually eight aspects or ‘Eight Limbs’ of yoga, yet most of us tend to only be aware of one of these the Asana, or the positions. However, yoga lived to its fullest is a comprehensive system of wellbeing on a mental, emotional, spiritual and physical level.




Why start yoga?


We find our busy selves caught up in doing rather than being, and in action rather than awareness. I believe that the ever growing global popularity of yoga and our eagerness to embrace yoga’s traditions are a testament to our growth and desire for change.


Yoga is a form of meditation. When I do yoga, I am thinking of nothing but that moment, that pose, how it makes my body feel. I am present, and that in itself is a practice of mindfulness.


After a few months of getting into yoga you begin to feel better, life seems more manageable and you start to feel happier and more at ease.


By committing to anything, you become disciplined by doing what you set your mind out to do, and the commitment to yoga has so many benefits you won’t go back.



How and where to practice yoga:


The beauty of yoga is that it can be practiced pretty much anywhere; on your own or with other yoga enthusiasts, at home, at work or even walking from A to B, because as we discovered, yoga is as much about our lifestyle as it is just the postures and positions.


There are an array of YouTube videos, which is in fact where I started my yoga journey, and we are now fortunate enough to have fantastic yoga studios across our cities. Other ways of accessing yoga are also popping up, such us, INTERYOGA. We know that incorporating the many aspects of yoga into your daily life can give you a renewed sense of purpose and an overall more positive outlook on life.
